About Me

Welcome! I'm YenAn, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in California, offering psychotherapy for the Asian community in the Bay Area.

Many of us pursue the American dream, but adapting to this fast-paced environment brings both external challenges and inner conflicts. We face pressures to succeed, but also struggle with feelings of being lost, overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed. In the Asian community, cultural expectations to “Be Strong” often make it hard to seek support, leading us to silently carry our pain.

As a social worker, I’ve had the honor of witnessing clients' healing journeys. Together, we’ve worked through pain, trauma, and life’s challenges. My role is to provide a safe space where you can explore your emotions, tap into your inner strength, and learn to manage stress. With compassion and clinical skills, I’ll support you in building resilience, developing coping skills, and most importantly, embracing self-love and acceptance.

Feedback

Over a year and a half of working with YenAn, we explored how my relationships, family, and life experiences affected my mental health. The sessions were a safe space where I could express myself without fear. YenAn’s support, along with medication, helped me heal. Now, I’ve overcome my social anxiety, traveled with friends, found a job, and improved my relationship with my parents. I feel like myself again.

“YenAn feels like both a mother and a sister—someone who genuinely cares. Thank you, YenAn, for listening, crying with me, and helping me discover my strengths. I’ve learned to set healthy boundaries, create a routine, and prioritize myself. While I can’t change my parents, I’ve found my own path forward. “

One memorable session was when we discussed exercise. Since I hadn’t kept up with our plan, we did push-ups, jumping jacks, and sit-ups right there. It was my first time exercising in years—I was out of breath, but it felt amazing. The exercise boosted my mood, shifted my focus, and stopped the cycle of overthinking. Having YenAn there to coach and encourage me made me truly believe, "I can make it."

Policy

  • No-show policy:

Please change or cancel your appointment at least 48 hours in advance. If you miss an appointment without a valid reason , the fee will be charged at the regular rate. Please respect your time and that of your therapist, and cultivate habits of responsibility and order.

  • Sliding fee:

The sliding fee amount will be adjusted based on individual income and family financial situations. Please inquire about this during your initial consultation.

  • Insurance :

I do not accept insurance, but I can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

  • Confidentiality:

I will not disclose any of your personal information or medical records without your consent. Please refrain from bringing unrelated individuals (such as friends, partners, or parents) to counseling sessions, and avoid conducting sessions in public or unsafe environments (like grocery shopping, driving, or working). Counseling time is precious, and I hope to fully focus on "you" in a safe and relaxed environment for self-exploration.

  • No Secret Policy:

If you are engaging in couples or family counseling, the No Secret Policy means that the "relationship" among service recipients is my focus rather than any specific individual. Therefore, if you disclose secrets or decisions that could harm the therapeutic or service relationship, I cannot keep those secrets. Please think carefully before deciding what information to disclose.

FAQ

  • Medication:

According to California law, LCSWs do not have prescribing authority. Please discuss any related needs with your primary care physician or psychiatrist.

  • Effectiveness:

Psychotherapy is typically a long-term treatment, but we will discuss your expectations and goals during the initial session and establish a treatment plan, including duration and frequency of sessions. Every twelve sessions (approximately three months), we will review treatment progress and make adjustments. Some clients may seek problem-solving for current issues, and these clients usually conclude therapy in about four sessions (one month).

  • Therapy Methods:

My therapeutic approach is diverse and not limited to a single theory. I select various useful techniques from evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, internal family systems, psychodynamic therapy, etc. I also incorporate worksheets and various activities (like drawing, music, videos, books, and exercise) to make the therapeutic process more engaging. For example, as an anime and K-pop fan, I often discuss works and songs with my clients and how they influence us.

  • Service Population:

I welcome clients from different races, cultures, sexual orientations, gender identities, and social classes. I believe everyone has a unique and remarkable life story. Ultimately, it depends on whether the issues you wish to address fall within my expertise and scope of practice. If I assess that collaboration is not appropriate, I will provide you with suitable referrals.

  • Therapeutic Relationship:

We have an equal collaborative relationship, without a hierarchy of power. This means that during the service process, we work together and strive toward your goals. I often encounter clients who misunderstand my role, expecting me to provide direct answers or solutions like a teacher or a jack-of-all-trades. I must clarify that this expectation exceeds reality, but I can promise to use my knowledge and resources to assist you.

  • Medical Records and Related Documents:

According to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), if someone requests to view your medical records without your consent, I will not disclose them to third parties, even if the request comes from a close family member or friend. All records will remain secure and protected.

  • Medical/Disability Leave or Emotional Support Animal:

For clients who have been in service for more than six months, if it is assessed that long-term medical leave and rest will be beneficial, I am willing to provide assistance within my capabilities. Please confirm leave details, processes, and provide any documents or proof that I need to fill out with your employer.
